PepsiCo launches innovative recycling program in Peru and donates US $2 million to Ciudad Saludable

Peru becomes the first country to implement the “Recycling with Purpose” program launched earlier this year by PepsiCo Latin America.

It is a circular economy model for Latin America based on consumer participation and education, inclusive recycling and the strengthening of the local recycling industry.

“PepsiCo wants to be part of the solution and will work continuously to build a world where plastics never become waste (…) but we recognize that we cannot do it alone, that’s why it is imperative that we get the consumer to participate in order to increase the collection of materials, as well as increasing recycling rates, “says Luis Montoya, president of PepsiCo Bebidas Latinoamérica.

The first component of the platform is an innovative participation program, which through an alliance with ecoins, will allow consumers in Peru to obtain discounts on a variety of products and services, including PepsiCo brands, in exchange for the collection of recyclable materials such as PET.

Once it is fully deployed, the platform seeks to reach 1 million people to promote awareness of recycling during its first year of operation throughout the region.

The second component of the platform is the inclusion of base recyclers as an integral part of the circular economy model. In this sense, PepsiCo Latin America has a long history of alliance with the NGO Ciudad Saludable, a catalyst for the recycling ecosystem in Peru.

With the support of PepsiCo, Ciudad Saludable has trained since 2008 3,162 community waste pickers and 210 public workers, also providing 22 municipalities with access to environmental management tools. In this period, 2,360 base recyclers and 48 recycling associations were formalized, which allowed them to be integrated into the municipal waste management systems.

On Tuesday, the PepsiCo Foundation, the non-profit arm of the company, announced a US $ 2 million donation to Ciudad Saludable to support the inclusion of 1,000 base recyclers in the recycling collection routes in eight countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico and Peru.

The program is also expected to indirectly benefit 800,000 people at the community level with better recycling services, and to collect 6,000 tons of recyclable materials per year throughout the region.

The third component of Recycling with Purpose focuses on working with the local recycling industry to strengthen the recycling system and increase the availability of recycled materials.

By 2021, PepsiCo expects this program to be operating in 10 countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Guatemala and Jamaica.

PepsiCo estimates that in its first year of operations, ecoins will have 300,000 accounts and will provide recycling information to almost one million people in the region. In addition, through the donation to Ciudad Saludable, at least 1,000 base recyclers will be integrated into the circular economy model for 2021.
