Coronavirus: Apple designs face shields and prepares donation of face masks

Apple Inc. is designing face shields for medical workers and has obtained more than 20 million masks through its global supply chain to help fight the coronavirus, said the head of the company, Tim Cook.

Cook made the announcement Sunday on Twitter, saying his design, engineering, packaging and operations teams are working with suppliers to manufacture and ship the face protector.

The first shipment was delivered to a Santa Clara, California hospital last week. The protectors are fully adjustable and assemble in less than two minutes, he said, adding that Apple plans to ship more than a million this week and another million a week thereafter.

Apple plans to expand the shipment of protectors beyond the United States, the executive said. The company has closed its 458 retail stores outside China to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and has required engineers and designers to work from home.
