In Mexico, the Boehringer Ingelheim corporation has been present since 1954, initiating its commercial activity through representative distribution companies. In 1971, the shares of Laboratorios Promeco were acquired and the production plant was built south of Mexico City.

In 1996, the manufacture of human health products was concentrated in two macro production centers located in Columbus, Ohio, and in Mexico City. This internal regionalization project was called OPINA (Optimization of Pharmaceuticals in North America).

Thanks to the high quality standards in all its processes, Boehringer Ingelheim Mexico is considered a strategic production center to supply international markets, mainly in North America, as well as in Asia, Central and South America. In their Mexico plant, more than 80 million units are produced per year of Medical Prescription, Free Sale, Animal Health and for the Industrial Consumption business.

Boehringer Ingelheim is the first pharmaceutical company in Mexico that has the certification of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) of the United States to export prescription drugs to the most demanding market in the world. And by the EMA (European Medicines Agency) for the export of medicines to the countries of this continent.

In 2013 they obtained recognition as a Family Responsible Company, granted by the Ministry of Labor; and the distinctive Quality of Life in the Company, awarded by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI), both in recognition of the good labor practices of inclusion and equality that we have.

The company invests more than 20% of its total net sales in Research and Development of new molecules in various therapeutic areas, thanks to which the company had more than 10 new releases for 2016, mainly in the areas of oncology and respiratory.

In Mexico, they invest more than 50 million pesos a year in clinical research, participating in 203 research centers nationwide. They have also invested more than 193 million pesos, in the last 2 years, in the production of their new anti-diabetic products.

Also, for 2017 the company invested more than 90 million pesos in the infrastructure (buildings and offices) of its campus in Xochimilco and more than 200 million pesos in new equipment and infrastructure for the growth of the Animal Health business.

Since 2003 the company has been certified as Clean Industry by PROFEPA, has a water treatment plant that allows you to save more than 29 million liters of water per year, used to irrigate its 4 hectares of green areas.

Likewise, the company avoids the annual emission of more than 5 tons of carbon dioxide and avoids global warming, thanks to the use of solar panels and natural gas.

Another of the corporation’s strong community support programs is the Más Salud initiative, in partnership with Ashoka. With this program, more than 15 million euros have been allocated to support 51 social entrepreneurs in different parts of the world. In Mexico, specifically, the foundation Tierra de Amaranto is supported, which seeks to make the amaranth known and used as an element to improve nutrition, health and living conditions of rural communities in Mexico, generating a culture of development and sustainability that involves the different sectors of society.

“Help me” is the program through which Boehringer Ingelheim Mexico grants donations of medicines and financial support to charities, patronages and foundations, as well as the sponsorship of events and projects for the benefit of various institutions. With this program, it has been able to benefit more than 8,000 people annually.
